Simply Sushi – PVR’s Gourmet Entry is about sushi & more!

Gone are the days when we used to go to a cinema hall just for movies. Mutliplexes came in and changed the way people watched movies. A meal before or after the movie is something that never changed, till in-movie dining was introduced. While initially limited to popcorn and cold drink, the in-movie dining menus are world class these days – with cinema specific menus being designed, there is a lot of research going on in this field.

Recently when we met Chef Yutaka Saito and Chef Mayank Tiwari at Simply Sushi, PVR Director’s Cut, Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, we got to know the intricacies involved in designing the menu for an in-movie dining experience. The food needs to have minimal aroma, because it is to be served in a closed space, the balance of spices needs to be apt and it needs to be easy to eat, since there is limited lighting. Keeping all these things in mind, PVR has introduced the sushi menu for the in-movie dining experience. The quintessential sushi counter inside PVR Director’s Cut, Simply Sushi, is open to all and also provides the sushi experience, while you enjoy a movie at the theaters that are a league apart.

With over 35 years of experience, Chef Yutaka Saito is the brain behind established Japanese restaurants and brings in experience from around the world. He’s been in India for over 6 years now – traveling between Delhi and Mumbai – handling restaurants. Simply Sushi has a menu designed by Chef Yutaka Saito and Chef Mayank Tiwari, Group Executive Chef of PVR. Sit down at the nine-something-seater-counter and watch your sushi being made by the talented chefs – it’s the best way of having sushi. Open to all, this counter serves varieties of sushi and something called #Japadogs. Chef Saito says – The menu at Simple Sushi is a balanced one – both for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Our focus is not just on seafood, contrary to the popular belief, but fresh vegetarian produce too. Quality is of utmost importance – most of our produce is flown in from Japan to maintain the highest standards. It assures that nothing but the best goes to our patrons.

It’s a pleasure to see the sushi being made in front of you. We had the Salmon Avocado Temaki and the Dynamite Temaki – hand rolled, as the name suggests – these are wrapped in nori sheets. The ingredients are imported from Japan we were told, or sourced from the best suppliers in the country, and that completely reflects in the food. Kampachi Carpaccio was our choice from the appetizers section; served with gari, wasabi and soy sauce.

Apart from the sushi menu that is available for ordering, Chef Yutaka Saito and Chef Mayank Tiwari have also introduced #Japadogs. A perfect blend of two concepts – #Japadogs brings the flavors of Japanese curries wrapped in the traditional hotdogs. Fond of experimenting with flavors, Chef Saito says he kept in mind the palate of the clientele in India while deciding on the flavors of the #Japadogs and came up with varieties like Meat Ball Dog, Spicy Chili Bean Dog, Teriyaki Onion Dog. Teriyaki Onion Dog and Chicken Teriyaki Dog were served to us, along with portions of crisp French Fries and mayonnaise. The fusion of flavors is prevalent and the twist of taste by Chef Yutaka Saito does it’s magic.
